The Adamawa State House of Assembly has recommended the suspension of Chairman Madagali Local Government Council in Adamawa State, Hon. Simon Musa Sashi for three weeks.
The lawmakers’ decision followed the closure of schools across the local government area, which they described as the illegal and unconstitutional by Adamawa State House of Assembly.
As such, the lawmakers have forwarded recommendation to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri who hails from the local government to suspend the council chairman with immediate effect from 1st, December, 2025.
The lawmakers acted on a motion of urgent public importance raised by the Majority Leader and member representing Demsa Constituency, Kate Raymond Mamuno during the resumed plenary of the 8th Assembly Monday presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley.
The House also mandated it’s Standing Committees on Education and that of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to investigate the circumstances surrounding the closure of schools and report back within three weeks.
According to Mamuno, the council Chairman unilaterally directed the closure of schools without consulting the State Government or obtaining approval from the Ministry of Education or State Universal Basic Education Board.
She explained that the State Government had issued any directives for the of schools due to national security but deboard all boarding schools across the state.
“The action of the Council Chairman is reckless, unconstitutional, and beyond his powers, education of pupils and students in Madagali local government area have already been affected by years of insecurity should not be subjected to further disruptions,” she noted.
During deliberations, members who contributed described the Chairman’s action was ultra vires and could set a dangerous precedent if left unchecked, and warned other council chairmen to operate strictly within the confines of the law.
After adopting the motion, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the House resolutions to the Governor for further action.
Madagali local government area which borders wiith Sambisa forest, den of Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State was amongst the worst hit LGA by insurgents in recent years.
