NewsNigeriaPoliticsConstitution Amendment: Kalu Advocates Ties With State Assembly Deputy Speakers

Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has sought the collaboration of Deputy Speakers of State Houses of Assembly, urging them to work closely with the National Assembly as the constitution review exercise enters a critical stage.

In a press statement signed by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Kalu made the call during an interactive meeting with the State Assembly Deputy Speakers in Abuja on Tuesday night. Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, stressed that the participation of state legislatures is indispensable to a successful amendment process.

During the session, he distributed copies of the final report of the joint constitution review committees of both chambers, along with the amended bills scheduled for legislative voting. He noted that sharing the documents ahead of Thursday’s parliamentary debate would keep state lawmakers fully informed and aligned with progress made so far.

He said: “On the constitution review, we want to collaborate with you. It is important that you receive first-hand information on the work being done. From the onset, we have always insisted that State Houses of Assembly be part of the process. We will make copies of these documents available to you, including those relating to the Electoral Act. The Senate and the House have concluded the final joint retreat, and the next stage is for members of parliament to debate it. It has been an intense journey, but we have made significant progress. There is a clear path for meaningful cooperation between us. I am confident that this platform will serve as a strong pillar for advancing democracy in Nigeria.”

In their separate contributions, the Deputy Speakers of Delta and Benue States, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowhowho and Rt. Hon. Lami Danladi, speaking on behalf of their colleagues, hailed Kalu for steering a people-focused constitutional amendment process. They also lauded his leadership in pushing for the reserved seats bill aimed at enhancing women’s representation in governance.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Deputy Speaker formally presented the report of the joint Constitution Review Committees to the House for consideration.
