The Kebbi State Government has officially directed the reopening of all primary and secondary schools across the state for the second term of the 2025/2026 academic session, bringing an end to the prolonged closure prompted by a deadly school attack in November 2025.
The resumption directive, which takes effect on Monday, January 5, 2026, was contained in separate statements signed by Isah Ibrahim, Public Relations Officer of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and Aliyu Bagarawa, Deputy Director (Academics) of the Kebbi State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
The government urged school administrators, teachers, parents, students, and education secretaries to take note and ensure strict compliance with the resumption order. School heads have been instructed to make adequate preparations to guarantee a smooth return to academic activities.
Parents and guardians were also advised to ensure that their children and wards return to school promptly.
In a related circular, zonal education officers, principals, head teachers, and proprietors of private schools were informed that the first week of resumption will be devoted to first-term examinations, while normal academic activities and classroom instruction are scheduled to begin on Monday, 12 January 2026. Schools have been directed to adhere strictly to both the resumption timetable and examination schedule as approved by the state government.
Schools in Kebbi were ordered shut following a violent attack by armed bandits on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town, Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, in November 2025.
The raid resulted in the abduction of 25 schoolgirls and the death of the school’s vice principal.
The incident drew widespread condemnation from civil society groups and international organisations. UNICEF decried the attack, calling for urgent and sustained efforts to protect children, teachers, and schools across Nigeria
The Federal Government and security agencies responded to the abduction with rescue efforts, and all 25 students were subsequently freed through what the state governor described as non-kinetic methods led by the military in collaboration with security operatives.
