The Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Mr Zacch Adedeji, has called on security agencies to remain vigilant following widespread rumours of planned protests against the newly implemented tax laws.

Mr Adedeji made the appeal on Sunday during an interview on Arise Television, where he urged Nigerians to avoid being misled by misinformation and to understand the provisions of the tax reforms before reacting.

He said that the reforms — which took effect on 1 January 2026 — followed due legislative process and cannot be suspended simply on demand.

“The only message I have for Nigerians is that people should not listen to rumours. They should analyse the data as it affects them. They should wait for the result, not mass or mob action,” Mr Adedeji said, reiterating that public discourse should be grounded in facts rather than speculation.

The NRS boss rejected calls for the suspension of the tax laws as unconstitutional, stressing that legislation duly passed by the National Assembly cannot be halted by individuals or pressure groups..

“No individual, except in an emergency, can suspend the law. The law passed by the National Assembly is the law,” he stated.

Mr Adedeji also reiterated that the tax reform bills underwent extensive consultations, including public hearings at the National Assembly lasting more than six months before enactment. He emphasised that any grievances should be addressed through legislative amendments rather than mass action.

“Implementation has started. People have started to see the result, and they say they want to go on [a] protest. I am using this opportunity to call all the security agencies to be on alert,” he added.
