Lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly have initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct.
Major Jack, Majority Leader of the House, formally presented a notice detailing allegations of misconduct against the governor during a session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule.
Citing Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, Major Jack outlined seven specific allegations against Governor Fubara, which include: the demolition of the Assembly complex, spending outside approved budgets, withholding funds allocated to the Assembly Service Commission, and failure to comply with Supreme Court rulings on the financial autonomy of the legislature.
A total of 26 legislators endorsed the notice, signalling broad support within the Assembly.
Following its presentation, Speaker Amaewhule stated that the notice would be officially served on Governor Fubara within seven days, in line with constitutional requirements.
Shortly after, the Deputy Leader of the House, Linda Stewart, also introduced a separate notice accusing Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu of gross misconduct.
Among the allegations levelled against the deputy governor are claims of unconstitutional and reckless expenditure of public funds, deliberate interference with the Assembly’s constitutional responsibilities and alleged collusion to allow individuals to occupy public offices without proper legislative screening.
She is also accused of seeking budgetary approvals from an alternative group rather than the recognised Rivers State House of Assembly, as well as the alleged withholding of salaries and allowances due to lawmakers and the Assembly Service Commission.
The impeachment process now awaits the next constitutional steps as political tensions continue to rise in the state.
This is the third impeachment attempt by the Rivers State House of Assembly against the governor after failed efforts in 2023 and 2025.
This recent development comes barely a year ago, after a coalition of civil rights organisations, led by the Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness called for an urgent investigation into allegations made by the former Head of Service of Rivers State, Dr George Nwaeke, against Governor Fubara.
