The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to prioritizing innovation and the adoption of a performance-based curriculum in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope economic recovery agenda.
Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmed, Minister of State for Education, stated this at the opening ceremony of a five-day workshop to review the 2020 Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) Minimum Standards held in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.
The exercise aims to align the NCE Minimum Standards with current realities and global best practices.
The minister noted that the review comes at a critical time as the country responds to emerging demands driven by digital transformation, competency-based learning, inclusive education, and entrepreneurship.
According to her, the exercise represents a shift from a largely theoretical curriculum to a more interactive, performance-based framework for teacher education, better suited to 21st-century needs.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education, Prof. Paulinus Chijoke Okwelle, said the review of the Minimum Standards would mark a new phase in efforts to strengthen and reposition teacher education in Nigeria.
Declaring the workshop open, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule called on participants to demonstrate commitment and patriotism in producing a result-oriented document that would improve the quality of education and learning outcomes for Nigerian children.
The governor, while appealing to the joint unions to suspend their ongoing strike actions, announced the immediate implementation of the new minimum wage for workers in state-owned tertiary institutions and
Representatives of international development partners, including the British Council and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), pledged support for the review process and the effective implementation of the revised NCE Minimum Standards.
The workshop attracted provosts and management staff of Colleges of Education from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as officials from the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria and the Universal Basic Education Commission.
