Following the recent protest by students of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, over the relocation of the NYSC Orientation Camp, Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazak has directed the suspension of the Polytechnic’s Rector, Abdul Jimoh Mohammed.
The Governor had constituted a three-man panel of inquiry to unravel the circumstances surrounding the student unrest at the Polytechnic’s main campus.
The State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, made this known on Wednesday in a statement, explaining that the committee has two weeks to submit its report to the governor.
The statement reads in part: “The governor has meanwhile directed the Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Dr Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, to immediately step aside from his role until further notice, while the most senior Deputy Rector acts in his place in the interim.
“The committee will engage with all relevant stakeholders in the course of its assignment”.
The statement said the committee is headed by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman. Other members are the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge, and the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare, Dr Mrs Mercy Olufunke Shittu.
According to the statement, the terms of reference of the committee include examining the remote and immediate causes of the protest, and the handling of the situation.
The committee is also to recommend ways to prevent similar incidents in the future, as well as making further recommendations on the growth of the institution.
