The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared itself “fully repositioned and ready to reclaim power nationwide” as it intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections, following a high-level consultative meeting with former Vice President Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo in Abuja on Tuesday evening.
Party leaders said the closed-door engagement with Sambo, who served as Vice President under former President Goodluck Jonathan, was part of an ongoing internal reconciliation and strategy drive aimed at uniting the party, strengthening its competitiveness ahead of future polls.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) reaffirmed Sambo’s commitment to the party and elaborated on the opening of the presidential race to qualified aspirants from Southern Nigeria, including Jonathan.
Sambo Reaffirms Loyalty and Guidance
Turaki said Sambo “remains, and will continue to remain, a member of the PDP” and assured that the former vice-president had offered strategic counsel to help strengthen the party’s unity and electoral prospects.
“He further assured us that he would soon become more active than before and that whenever there is any issue requiring attention, we should not hesitate to reach out to him,” Turaki told reporters.
The meeting was attended by senior party officials, including members of the Board of Trustees, National Working Committee (NWC), former governors, serving and former legislators, state chairmen, and other key stakeholders drawn from across the federation.
Presidential Ticket Open, Zoning to the South Confirmed
Responding to questions about the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan contesting the 2027 presidential ticket on the PDP platform, Turaki confirmed that the party had formally zoned its presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.
He said: “You see, as I have always said, we in PDP have decided to zone our presidential ticket to the southern part of this country. For now, we do not know who may emerge as our candidate, even though we know those who will not be our candidates.”
Turaki added, “So it’s open for every member of PDP that is living in southern Nigeria or of southern Nigerian descent. The process is going to be open, it’s going to be transparent, it’s going to be fair, it’s going to be equitable, and it’s going to create a level playing field for everybody.”
The PDP Chairman emphasised that while the eventual candidate has not been determined, the party is poised to ensure that the nomination process is credible and inclusive.
