The Lagos State Government has announced a strategic partnership with MTN Nigeria to redevelop the long‑neglected Obalende under‑bridge into a modern transport hub to be known as the Y’ELLO Bus Park.
The project aims to transform one of the city’s most congested and degraded spaces into a safe, functional and environmentally friendly facility for commuters and residents.
Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, made the announcement on Tuesday via his official X account, underscoring the government’s resolve to reclaim public spaces and improve urban living conditions.
“I am pleased to announce that the Lagos State Government is collaborating with MTN Nigeria to redevelop and transform the Obalende under‑bridge into a modern, well‑structured transport hub to be known as Y’ELLO Bus Park,” Wahab said.
According to Wahab, the initiative will convert what he described as a previously “notorious and degraded space” into a “functional, secure and community‑centred facility.”
The redevelopment is expected to include an organised and regulated transport terminal, a recycling drop‑off station, and a road camp for officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and security agencies.
The planned Y’ELLO Bus Park will also feature more than 60 public toilets, kiosks and other essential amenities designed to enhance convenience, hygiene and comfort for users.
Wahab said that safety, public health, and aesthetics were central to the design of the hub, which will be equipped with solar‑powered lighting to improve night‑time visibility, reduce blind spots, and strengthen closed‑circuit television (CCTV) coverage.
He noted that improved lighting and surveillance would help deter crime in the Obalende area.
“The design prioritises safety, health, and aesthetics. Solar‑powered lighting will improve night‑time visibility, reduce blind spots, and enhance CCTV effectiveness, helping to curb criminal activities and improve overall security in the Obalende axis,” Wahab said.
To address environmental concerns, the project will include a biodigester system to manage wastewater sustainably, and a dedicated recycling station to discourage illegal waste disposal.
Solar panels will also be installed to support energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, in line with Lagos State’s broader climate goals.
In addition, tree planting is planned to improve air quality and enhance the visual appeal of the environment, reflecting the government’s commitment to ecological sustainability and urban beautification.
Wahab described the project as a demonstration of the government’s determination “to make Lagos cleaner, safer and more resilient, while ensuring that public infrastructure works for the people in a modern and responsible way.”
