No fewer than 11 persons have been killed and over 50 houses razed following renewed violence between Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The clash, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, has heightened tension in the Udege Development Area, with residents fleeing their homes over fears of further attacks.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, had visited the affected communities to restore calm.

“The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the same day, involved hoodlums suspected to have carried out a reprisal attack over the alleged killing of two of their kinsmen,” said Nansel.

“In the course of the attack, 11 persons were killed, while about 50 houses were burnt in Akyawa and two houses in Udege Kasa.”

He added that the CP had ordered “an intensive manhunt” for the perpetrators and deployed additional security personnel in collaboration with the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Police authorities also held a stakeholders’ meeting, urging residents to remain calm and provide credible information to aid investigations.

Despite official assurances that normalcy has been restored, local sources said the attack may be linked to suspected armed groups believed to have earlier struck nearby Sabon Gida, destroying homes and farm produce.

Residents expressed frustration over what they described as a failure of preventive security, alleging that attackers had been sighted before the assault.
