A petty trader in Plateau State, Mrs. Sarah Luka, who returned N1 million she discovered in goods she purchased at Terminus Market in Jos has been rewarded with N500, 000 cash for her generosity by a prominent politician and businessman, Ambassador Abubakar Sadeeq.
Mrs. Luka, who operates a small business along Lamingo Road, had purchased leather bags worth about N6, 000 from a wholesaler, Mr. Abubakar Dola about two weeks ago.
Unknown to her at the time, the goods she bought contained a polythene bag filled with N1 million cash, which had been mistakenly concealed among the goods and upon discovering the money at her residence, she immediately returned it to the rightful owner without hesitation.
Ambassador Plaza, while presenting the money, praised Mrs. Luka’s integrity, describing her action as a model worthy of emulation across the country, noted that such acts have the potential to strengthen unity and rebuild trust among Nigeria’s diverse religious and ethnic groups.
He said the donation of N500, 000 is to support her business and encouraged Nigerians, regardless of background, to embrace values of integrity and accountability.
“I am personally impressed by her honesty. This is the kind of character our society needs,” he said.
He urged leaders at all levels to promote ethical standards in both public and private life, noting that such values are essential for fostering peaceful coexistence and national development.
Upon receiving the cash reward, Mrs. Luka attributed her action to fear of God and a strong commitment to integrity, emphasizing that honesty transcends religious and ethnic boundaries, particularly in a diverse city like Jos.
“I did what I believe is right. The money does not belong to me,” she said.
Reacting to the development, the owner of the money, Mr. Dola, expressed profound gratitude and relief, describing the gesture as uncommon, especially in the face of current economic challenges.
Leaders in the market community also commended Mrs. Luka, noting that her conduct serves as a moral example that inspires others to uphold honesty in their daily dealings.
