Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has publicly endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor in the 2027 governorship election, describing him as the “best man for the job.”

The endorsement was made during a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders at the Governor’s Office in Alausa, Lagos.

Speaking at the gathering, Sanwo-Olu offered prayers for his deputy, wishing him success and divine support ahead of future political engagements.

“Peace of mind, peace in your family among your children, wife, spouse and everybody. That which you require, God will provide it for you: renewed strength, God Almighty will make it available for you,” he said.

The Governor also commended party stakeholders for their continued support and reaffirmed his confidence in Hamzat’s leadership capacity.

At the end of the meeting, Sanwo-Olu embraced his deputy and raised his hand before party leaders, a symbolic gesture that drew applause from the audience.

The development comes amid growing political discussions within the Lagos APC over potential aspirants for the 2027 governorship race, with Hamzat increasingly mentioned as a leading contender.

In recent weeks, there has been speculation about zoning, succession plans, and internal consultations within the party, although no formal decision has been announced.

Reacting to earlier reports suggesting that the party had already settled on a preferred candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, a former governorship candidate, dismissed the claims.

In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Gbenga Ogunleye, Jandor said the party leadership had not taken a formal decision.

He added, however, that he would align with the outcome if the party eventually adopts a consensus candidate for the race.

The Lagos APC has yet to issue an official position on the 2027 governorship succession debate.
