The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has outlined a series of sweeping internal reforms aimed at strengthening party discipline, entrenching institutional structures and reinforcing accountability among its members and candidates.
The resolutions were part of decisions reached at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, according to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
Central to the resolutions is a strong emphasis on party supremacy, with the NDC declaring that all programmes, policies and appointments of governments elected on its platform — excluding personal staff — must be undertaken in consultation with party structures.
“The party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party,” the statement said.
The party also directed that all affiliated groups and non-governmental organisations must operate strictly under its guidance and control, warning against parallel or independent structures.
As part of efforts to enforce discipline, the NDC announced plans to introduce a comprehensive Code of Conduct for party officials and candidates. A committee led by the National Legal Adviser has been constituted to develop the framework and guidelines.
In a move to address internal disputes, the party said it has inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee tasked with engaging aggrieved members and restoring unity within its ranks.
Reiterating its long-term vision, the NDC stressed that it is being built as “an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded,” urging members to remain committed to its growth and sustainability.
The party also unveiled strict financial accountability measures, mandating that all party funds be used solely for official purposes, while requiring candidates at all levels to fully disclose funding sources and contributions.
According to the statement, all monies must be channelled through designated party campaign accounts at the appropriate levels, including those for presidential and governorship campaigns.
The NDC said the measures are aimed at promoting transparency, strengthening internal governance and ensuring that both party officials and candidates remain accountable in the management of resources.
