Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling hunger and child malnutrition through the establishment of community food banks and the expansion of food outreach programmes under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
Speaking in Akure on Tuesday during the distribution of food items to vulnerable residents of Ondo State, the First Lady said the intervention was aimed at ensuring that no Nigerian, especially children, goes hungry.
Mrs Tinubu, who was represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, said the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu by providing support to vulnerable citizens and improving their quality of life.
She said the program would continue to prioritize access to nutritious food for children and other vulnerable groups.
“No Nigerian should go hungry; that is our mandate and part of our vision for Renewed Hope Initiative,” she said.
According to the First Lady, the RHI Food Outreach Scheme, launched in March 2024, provides food support to persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups to improve household welfare and reduce the impact of food insecurity.
She explained that the programme is sustained through the support of two donors who provide two truckloads of food items every month, enabling two states to benefit from the intervention monthly.
The latest distribution in Ondo is part of the nationwide expansion of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s food security programme, which has now reached most states of the federation.
In recent months, the initiative has also launched National Community Food Banks across the six geopolitical zones, with plans to integrate them into primary healthcare centers to improve nutrition for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and malnourished children.
Addressing the gathering, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, described the programme as a demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to reducing poverty and supporting the most vulnerable members of society.
He said the intervention went beyond the distribution of food items, describing it as an expression of compassion and shared responsibility.
Aiyedatiwa commended the Renewed Hope Initiative for consistently identifying and responding to the needs of vulnerable communities across the country.
The Governor also reaffirmed his administration’s political support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
“We have already declared Ondo State for Tinubu 2027 and we remain unwavering in our resolve to deliver en masse in the Sunshine State for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term,” he said.
He stressed that food security remains essential to human dignity, better educational outcomes and economic productivity, noting that access to adequate nutrition strengthens families and communities.
The Governor urged beneficiaries to see the intervention as part of broader efforts to build resilient communities through sustained social investment programmes.
Ahead of Tuesday’s event, the Ondo State Government disclosed that about 1,800 bags of rice and other food items would be distributed to widows, persons with disabilities, senior citizens and other indigent residents across the state’s 18 local government areas under the RHI Food Outreach Scheme.
