…Seeks Police Investigation
The Allied Peoples Movement (APM), has condemned the alleged blockade of the convoy of the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State, demanding an immediate police investigation into the incident.
The former Governor of Anambra State, was reportedly on his way to Yelwata on Tuesday to visit families affected by the recent killings in the area when his convoy was allegedly blocked by a group of suspected thugs.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Anthony Ehilebo, Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication to the APM presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, the party described the incident as “deeply disturbing and totally unacceptable.”
The APM alleged that the obstruction was politically motivated and accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to intimidate opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party linked the incident to Obi’s appearance a day earlier at the inauguration of the Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign Office in Abuja, where he joined other opposition figures in expressing solidarity with Makinde.
According to the statement, the alleged incident reflects what it described as growing political tension ahead of the 2027 elections.
The APM also rejected the explanation reportedly given by the Benue State Government that Obi didn’t obtain prior permission before visiting the state.
It argued that the constitutional rights to freedom of movement and association guarantee Nigerians the right to travel to and conduct legitimate activities in any part of the country.
The statement cited Sections 40 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution, which provide for freedom of association and freedom of movement respectively.
“Setting up roadblocks and engaging thugs to stop opposition candidates have no place in a constitutional democracy,” the party said.
The APM consequently called on the Police to commence a full-scale investigation into the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
The party, while reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful electoral process, said it would not be intimidated or deterred from participating in the 2027 elections.
“We remain committed to a peaceful electoral process; however, we state clearly that we shall not be deterred or cowed by the antics of those who seek to make peaceful participation impossible,” the statement added.
