NewsNigeriaPoliticsNOA DG to Nigerians: Adjust Your Lifestyle, Live Within Your Means

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, has urged Nigerians to adjust their lifestyles and manage their spending in line with their financial capacity amid the country’s economic challenges.

Issa-Onilu said Nigerians needed to adopt responsible habits, including reducing unnecessary electricity consumption and reassessing their spending priorities.

He made the call while speaking on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm, where he argued that adjusting one’s lifestyle was a necessary response to changing economic realities.

“You must have travelled abroad. You don’t go to anybody’s house as we speak, who has gone to work and you see the AC working or you see the light on,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to adopt similar habits to reduce waste and manage household expenses.

“Go to many homes in this country, we do that. So, we also must manage our lifestyle, it’s part of our responsibility,” he said.

“People must now understand that you have a responsibility to look at yourself and say, how do I adjust? Adjust is not suffering, adjust is living within your means.”

His remarks come amid public criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, with many Nigerians grappling with the cost of living and the effects of the administration’s reforms.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has acknowledged the sacrifices Nigerians have made as a result of the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, she said the government recognised the financial difficulties facing households but maintained that the reforms were necessary to address longstanding economic problems.

“Those decisions came at a cost and Nigerian families have felt it. No one in this government takes that sacrifice lightly, least of all Mr President,” she said.

“But I say to you today, with conviction, that the sacrifice is not in vain. The results are beginning to show.”

The minister spoke ahead of the unveiling of a book on the president’s reform agenda, titled The Courage to Reform: Architecture of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR — Beyond 2027: Statecraft, Vision for National Renewal.

The book, promoted by the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, is scheduled for launch on November 5 and is intended to showcase the administration’s policies and achievements over its first three years in office.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim has also defended the government’s borrowing plans, arguing that countries need substantial investment in infrastructure and productive sectors to build strong economies. She maintained that public borrowing should be assessed by the developmental benefits of the projects it finances.

The government’s defence of its policies comes as economic hardship remains a major issue in public debate ahead of the 2027 elections.

While Issa-Onilu has urged citizens to take greater responsibility for their household spending, the administration has continued to argue that its reforms are necessary to address structural weaknesses in the economy and deliver long-term benefits.
