Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu and secure victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State in the 2027 general election, setting himself against his father’s presidential ambition.
Abba made the declaration on Friday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja during the unveiling of the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation (HBTO), a political support group he founded, and the launch of its subsidised public transportation scheme.
Asked whether he was confident of delivering Adamawa, his father’s home state, to Tinubu, Abba said: “Yes, yes, yes. We are going to deliver Adamawa state.”
He dismissed suggestions that his decision to support Tinubu was intended to undermine his father, who is seeking the presidency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“I recognise that political decisions, particularly those that differ from the positions of individuals with whom one shares personal and family relationships, often attract considerable public attention,” he said.
“However, political conviction is a matter of personal judgment, conscience, and the freedom of every individual to make independent choices. My decision to establish and lead the HBTO is a deliberate political choice made with a firm belief in the direction we have chosen.”
Abba said democracy thrived when individuals were free to make independent political choices and support leaders and political platforms that reflected their aspirations.
He expressed support for Tinubu’s economic reforms, citing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), infrastructure investments, increased statutory allocations to state governments and transportation support initiatives.
Explaining his decision to support the president despite his father’s political ambition, he said his allegiance was based on his assessment of government policies rather than family considerations.
“I’ve always supported my father since I started acting in politics, and I supported him because of what he has done for the country,” he said.
“But I believe that whenever a government comes out with policies that will help the people, I will join them. It’s not just because it’s my father. I don’t think I am antagonising him; I simply believe in the current government’s policies and the reforms taking place.”
As part of its mobilisation strategy, HBTO unveiled 10 luxury buses for its subsidised transportation initiative, which will begin in the Federal Capital Territory before expanding to other parts of the country.
The organisation also announced plans to establish structures across the six geopolitical zones and organise a two-million-man mobilisation march to build support for Tinubu’s re-election.
Abba joined the APC in January 2026 after leaving his former political platform. He subsequently renamed his political organisation, initially established in 2022 as the Atiku Haske Organisation, the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation and directed its members to mobilise support for the President Tinubu.
His defection came despite his father’s opposition to Tinubu’s re-election bid. However, Atiku had described his son’s decision to join the APC as a personal choice, maintaining that he would not dictate his children’s political affiliations.
