Ugwuanyi Offers Scholarship to Nneoma Nnadi While Directing Attorney General to Bring Her Abusive Guardians to Book
The Enugu State Government has announced the decision to take up the medical bills and wellbeing of Miss Nneoma Nnadi as well as awarding her scholarship up to the University level.
This was contained in a letter dated 5th July 2020 signed by the Commissioner for Information, Chidi Aroh conveying the State government’s approval of the award of scholarship up to University level for Nneoma, the10-year-old child brutalized by her guardians; the State scholarship board were directed to implement the approval with immediate effect.
Nneoma until she was rescued was living with Mr. Jude& Mrs. Ifeoma Ozougwu in Akonameze Street Thinker’s Corner, Enugu; the Ozougwu’s hail from Aku in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Nneoma’s guardian and relative who is a mother of three maltreats her to the extent of using different sharp objects to inflict pains on the young girl.

Nneoma Nnadi’s body was marred with scars from hot pressing iron, iron rods and nails; Ifeoma Ozougwu also inserts pepper into Nneoma’s private part on the slightest provocation.
On Thursday, following a credible tip-off from the Ozougwu’s neighbours, operatives from the Enugu Area Police Command at about 0900 hours stormed the couple’s residence where they rescued an exhausted and traumatized Nneoma.
The Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdur-Rahman then instructed the Area Commander to rush her to ESUT Teaching hospital, Parklane for treatment.
The demeaning and grievous injuries inflicted on the 10 year old went viral on the social media drawing the attention of the State Governor who delegated the Commissioner for Gender Affairs and Social Development, Peace Nnaji to visit the victim at the hospital and ensure that she receives proper medical attention.
Nnaji, who was accompanied by the Chief Medical Director of ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, Prof. Hycienth Onah, to see the abused child, empathized with the victim and her immediate family promising that the state government will not take the matter lightly.
“This dastard act undermines the Child Rights Act the State enacted into law to make sure that every child in Enugu State is protected, given education, healthcare and right to life, among others”, Nnaji stressed.
She further thanked the good-spirited neighbours who raised an alarm that led to the rescue of Nneoma describing them as good Samaritans.
In her response, Mrs. Nnedinso Nnadi, the mother of the victim, expressed gratitude to Gov. Ugwuanyi for the state government’s concern and intervention, disclosing that it was a traumatic experience for the child and the entire family.
Mrs Nnadi prayed that God will reward all those who played a role towards the rescue and treatment of her daughter.
In his remark, Prof. Onah, Chief Medical Director of ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane, Enugu revealed, “Nneoma is responding to treatment and her chances of full recovery is high”.
