ENUGU — Ubosi Edward, Speaker Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday after plenary urged the Inspector General of Police to hearken to the yearnings and demands of the masses on disbanding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS in Nigeria Police Force.

He made this call while addressing the mammoth crowd of protesters against SARS that trooped into the House of Assembly Complex in peaceful demonstration against incessant police brutality.

“I urge the IG of Police to hearken to the yearnings of the masses and disband the controversial SARS in the interest of democracy,” Ubosi asserted.

“The people desire a police with human face and Enugu State House of Assembly is in support of the demonstration; we support the disbanding of SARS. We stand by the decisions of the people on this regards,” Ubosi stated.

“I applaud you for the peaceful demonstration. It is not brutal as recorded in some other states. I only plead that you end this protest peacefully,” Ubosi said.

Ubosi then called on the masses to always lend their voices in peaceful protest against any ill in the society. “Don’t protest only against SARS but protest as well against anything that is not good for the people”.

In his speech, a Nollywood actor Kendrick Ugo who spoke on behalf of the protesters emphatically stated that Nigerian youth demand that SARS be disbanded not just a reform.

“Beyond that, we are asking that they take care of the police personnel because most of this corruption stems from the fact that they are not well taken care of; the police welfare should be put into consideration”.

“If the welfare of the police officers is not improved, their attitude towards work and the populace will continue to deteriorate and any country that does not take care of her police is not ready for development; an angry man is always irritable and you don’t give an angry man a gun”.

“The function of every police all over the world is to protect lives and property; we don’t need a special squad to take care of what they are meant to do primarily”.

He further demanded that police officers guilty of extra judicial killings be brought to book while demanding justice for victims of police brutality.
