AWKA — Anambra state Governor; Chief Willie Obiano has suspended the submission of the 2021 Anambra state budget to the Anambra state House of Assembly, which was originally planned to hold today at the Anambra state House of Assembly complex in Awka, the state capital.
This is coming after the peaceful end SARS protest that has been on for about two weeks took a swift turn for the worst, following the events at the Lekki Toll Gate, Tuesday night. Although Anambra as of today is relatively calm compared to what is happening in Aba and Umuahia, as well as Enugu, however, the anger is boiling and it is very clear that tensions are extremely high. Though Nnewi had its first incidence last night, while Onitsha is also raising concerns, however, Awka is calm as of this moment.
Although there is no official statement or reaction by the government to the specific reasons why the budget presentation has been postponed, nonetheless, there are speculations that such activity at a time like this may be unsafe as it is bound to draw attention of the public and so the Assembly may be invaded by angry mobs or hoodlums. As can be observed from the trend across the country, it appears that many public institutions are under some kind of threat or another from being destroyed by angry mob and so conducting such activity is generally unsafe, for now.
However, governor Obiano in his address earlier today while announcing a 24 hours curfew in Anambra state, also remarked that the Anambra state 2021 budget will be presented in a matter of days, but he did not mention when.
Hopefully, if the nerves of rampaging young people are calm and it is safe for such gathering at the state House of Assembly complex, then, may be the budget will be presented next week. But right now, the Anambra state 2021 budget presentation is pending courtesy of the end SARS campaign.
