LAFIA — The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP) has allocated the sum of N1.5 billion for the construction of stormwater drains in five Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Nasarawa State to mitigate flooding.
Mr. Kwa’Kaha Jonathan, the Project Coordinator of NEWMAP in the state, said this while flagging off the project in Lafia on Friday.
Jonathan explained that NEWMAP, a World Bank assisted project, conceived the idea to execute the project in Nasarawa state to address gully erosion and other forms of environmental degradation.
The project coordinator listed the benefiting LGAs to include Lafia, Doma, Keffi, Nasarawa, and Toto respectively.
According to him, the contract, which was awarded to Consolidated Engineering and Trading Company Limited at the rate of N1.5 billion, is expected to be completed within the period of four months.
Gov. Abdullahi Sule commended NEWMAP for conceiving the idea and providing the funds to address the issue of flooding in the state.
Sule said that residents of the state had been facing environmental challenges as a result of mining activities, deforestation, over-grazing, and indiscriminate waste disposal.
He called on the benefitting communities to give the contractors the needed cooperation to enable them to deliver the project according to specification.
Earlier, Mr. Musa Ibrahim, the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, said the ministry was determined to address the issue of flooding across the state.
Ibrahim, however, assured NEWMAP of necessary assistance to ensure that the project records huge success in the state.
