The Enugu Catholic Diocese says the diocese will wear black outfits on Ash Wednesday in accordance with the directives of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, in protest of the rising insecurities in the country.
Confirming the development on Monday, the Enugu Catholic Diocesan spokesman, Reverend Benjamin Achi explained that the black outfit day, Wednesday 26th February, 2020 is in honor of victims of terrorism, kidnapping and other violent attacks across the country. Apart from the outfit, the procession will involve prayers and offering of penance for the repose of the victims.
“What better time than Ash Wednesday, the yearly Christian holy day of prayer and fasting, and the first day of lent, to offer prayers for the victims of insecurity” he said. The prayers will also afford the church an opportunity to seek the face of God on more effective ways of dealing with the insecurity situation.
The Diocesan spokesman called on both Catholic and non-Catholics to participate in the exercise stressing that through this means, the church can voice her anger at the failure of both the Federal and State government as regards security of lives and properties of Nigerians.
The CBCN had on two occasions discussed security issues with President Muhammadu Buhari and will not cease nor fold its arm and watch insecurity worsen in the Nation.
The Catholic Bishops he said will continue to engage government and security agencies regularly to ensure that insecurity in various parts of the country is brought under control.
Recall that the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, had through its president, Archbishop Augustine Akubueze invited Christians to wear black outfits and join in prayers for peace and security in Nigeria.
