To ensure peaceful conduct of general elections in 2023, 10 of the 15 gubernatorial candidates in Adamawa state have signed a peace accord for violent free polls in the state.
The candidates sign the accord at an event held at Madugu Rock view Hotel Saturday was organized by the police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Barr Hudu Yunusa, said the signing of the peace accord is a commitment by all candidates towards the conduct of issue-based campaigns.
He implored them to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship by recognizing that only one candidate will emerge as the winner at the end of the exercise.
The REC implored the candidates to enlighten their supporters on the need to desist from all forms of hate speech and to conduct themselves with decorum to ensure peaceful and violence-free elections.
While reiterating the commission’s commitment towards conducting free, fair, and credible elections, urged them to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship by recognizing that only one candidate will emerge as the winner at the end of the exercise.
“I, therefore, implore you to ensure peace before, during, and after the election.
“Electoral violence is a great threat to free, fair, and credible elections, adding that violence-free elections would benefit the state,” he said.
Also speaking, the Adamawa state Commissioner of Police, CP Sikiru Akande, commended the parties and their candidates for peaceful electioneering and urged them to sustain the tempo, noting that there was no political violence recorded since the commencement of the campaign in the state.
“For us, the security services will not do anything to make the level playing ground unfair to anybody.
“And when we achieve that, about 90 percent of the election problems will be over,” he said, stressing that no meaningful development could be achieved without peace.
In a remark, the state director of the Department of Security Service (DSS), Babagana Bulama, urged political parties and their candidates to play the game according to its rules to ensure peace throughout the electioneering process.
“Peace is the foundation of development, hence the need for all to understand and abide by the laws,” he said.
