President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday left Abuja for Europe to begin a three-week vacation, with the break coming months before Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced the trip in a statement on Sunday.
The Presidency said the trip is part of Tinubu’s annual leave and that his first destination would be London, United Kingdom.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja today for Europe to begin a three-week vacation as part of his annual leave. His first stop will be London, United Kingdom,” the statement said.
Onanuga said the President would return to Nigeria after the break to participate in campaign activities ahead of the January 2027 election.
“President Tinubu is expected to return home after the working vacation to join the hectic campaign for the January 2027 election,” he said.
The departure comes as Nigeria’s political parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. The presidential election is scheduled for 16 January 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are due on 6 February.
Tinubu has already secured the backing of the ruling All Progressives Congress for a second term.
His return from the three-week break is therefore expected to coincide with a more intense phase of political activity as the country approaches the elections.
The President’s latest trip also continues his pattern of taking annual leave abroad while remaining engaged with official matters.
In October 2024, Tinubu travelled to the United Kingdom for a two-week annual leave, which the Presidency described at the time as a “working vacation” and a retreat to reflect on his administration’s economic reforms.
His relationship with Britain has also deepened in recent months. In March 2026, Tinubu made a state visit to the United Kingdom, where he was hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle — the first Nigerian presidential state visit to Britain in 37 years.
That visit included talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and engagements focused on trade and bilateral relations.
The Presidency did not disclose Tinubu’s full itinerary for the three-week vacation or identify the other European destinations he will visit.
For now, his first stop is London — but the bigger political journey awaits his return, when he is expected to plunge back into the increasingly heated race for the presidency in 2027.
