The Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Professor Joseph Albasu Kunini, resigned from his position.

Reading the resignation letter sent by the lawmaker, Joseph Albasu Kunini, at an emergency session held at the Chamber of the House on Wednesday around 8 am in Jalingo, was presided over by the Deputy speaker of the house, Hamman Adama Abdullahi.

Mr. Abdullahi said the former Speaker said his resignation was based on personal reasons.

The 24-member assembly unanimously elected Kizito Bonzina, a member representing the Zing Local Government Area, and former Chairman House Committee on Education sworn in as the new speaker.

Mr. Kunini, a professor, was elected speaker in 2019 following the resignation of the then-speaker, Abel Peter, who had disagreements with the state governor, Darius Ishaku, on several occasions.

Mr. Kunini too has been having disagreements with the governor over the non-payment of seven years of outstanding allowances of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) Taraba State chapter.

The embattled speaker was fingered by the executive arm of the government for the face-off between the PASAN and the Taraba government members
