In line with section 34, sub-section 1 of the Electoral Act 2022, the Labour Party has conveyed her intentions to participate in the election for Enugu East constituency; the party seeks to replace her deceased candidate.
“(1) If after the time for the delivery of nomination paper and before the commencement of the poll, a nominated candidate dies, the Chief National Electoral Commissioner shall, being satisfied of the fact of the death, countermand the poll in which the deceased candidate was to participate and the Commission shall appoint some other convenient date for the election within 14 days.”
The postponement of the senatorial election became expedient with the gruesome murder of the Labour Party candidate for Enugu East Senatorial candidate, Barrister Oyibo Chukwu and his Personal Assistant on Wednesday at Eke-Out Amaechi-Awkunanaw area in Enugu South Local Government Area.
Hence, election in the senatorial district slated for Saturday 25th February 2023 has been moved to March 11, 2023.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Chairman Mahmood Yakubu made this known at a media briefing on Friday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
Yakubu reveals, “Labour party has conveyed its intention to participate in the election for that constituency by replacing its deceased candidate.”
“Having provided satisfactory evidence of the death of its candidate, the Commission has suspended election in the Senatorial district as provided by law.”
“Therefore, there will be no Senatorial election in Enugu East Senatorial District made up of 6 Local Government Areas, 77 Wards and 1630 Polling Units as scheduled on 25th February 2023.”
“The election will now be combined with the governorship and State Assemblies elections holding in the next 2weeks, on 11th of March 2023.”
The Chairman further revealed that the electoral materials for the senatorial election in the senatorial district will remain in the custody of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, till the new date.
