HealthNewsNigeriaOver 800,000 Women In Nigeria Lives With Vesicovaginal Fistula

The Program Office of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Adamawa, Dr. Danladi Idrissa says over 800,000 women in Nigeria are living with Vesicovaginal fistula, with the majority in the northern part of the country.

He disclosed this at the graduation ceremony of 50 fistula survivors at the Women Development Centre, Jimeta-Yola Adamawa State.

“UNFPA in conjunction with the Fistula Foundation and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development had conducted surgical repair of about 265 cases out of which 225 were healed,” he said.

Dr. Idrissa lamented that 40 patients required a high level of surgical operation which cannot be conducted in the state due to a lack of high-class facilities.

He said to prevent girls from being a victim of fistula during childbirth and committing suicide, parents should not marry off young girls at an early age.
