The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed the application for a live broadcast of the court proceedings.
The Labour Party, LP, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had requested for a live coverage of the court proceedings of their petitions against the president-elect, Bola Tinubu.
Delivering the unanimous decision of the five-man panel on Monday, Justice Haruna Tsammani said the application by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, presidential candidates of the PDP and LP lacked merit.
The panel held that the order sought by the petitioners was outside the scope of their petitions, adding that televising of proceedings is not provided for in any law.
Justice Tsammani noted that the request if granted, was capable of turning the courtroom into a stadium or marketplace and that must not be allowed.
In other news, the court has banned the use of mobile phones and other gadgets including laptops in the courtroom.
“Read me! Phones and other gadgets are not allowed in the courtroom. Thank you as you comply,” the notice pasted on the three entrances leading into the courtroom on Saturday morning read.
The law took effect on Monday.
