The Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi, Speaker Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday urges the incoming legislative members of the 8th House Assembly to work in unity irrespective of party affiliation for the continuous progress and development of the state.
Ubosi made this appeal at the Valedictory session organized at the Legislative complex to mark the end of the 7th House Assembly; the 7th Assembly commenced on Monday 10th June 2019 and ended on Thursday 25th May 2023.
Recounting some achievements of the 7th Assembly, the Speaker acknowledged that peace and unity of purpose amongst the members and cordial relationship with other arms of Government was their strength.
Ubosi reveals, “The 7th House passed a total of 43 bills and over ten motions and resolutions in the last four years.”
“37 out of the 43 passed bills were assented to by the State Governor, His Excellency Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.”
Speaker then commended his colleagues for excelling above the diverse challenges they faced during the years in review; the six months strike action by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Covid-19 and its effect on the economy.
On his part, the leader of the House, Mr. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, thanked the people of Udenu for allowing him to represent them for the past 12 years, describing it as a rare privilege.
Ezeugwu said his experience at the House had not only made him a better person but spurs him to render selfless service to humanity through his Foundation.
Ezeugwu applauded his colleagues especially the Speaker, Edward Ubosi for a cordial working relationship he enjoyed despite negative predictions by the people.
But Mr. Chinedu Okwu, member representing Aninri Constituency was of a dissent opinion; Okwu asserted that the 7th Assembly would have achieved more only if free expression is promoted.
He stated that the seventh assembly focused more on politicking than delivering quality representation.
Okwu noted that many laudable bills, motions, and resolutions were sacrificed on the altar of politics because, according to him, some people were not in support of such legislation irrespective of the people’s yearnings.
The lawmaker warned the incoming 8th Assembly to be wary of being over-loyal to the government in power, stressing that the loyalty of the outgoing assembly affected its performance.
Mr. Jeff Mbah, representing Oji River constituency, asked the incoming assembly to avoid what he called guided-democracy to avoid being seen as rubber-stamped.
While noting that the seventh assembly contributed its quota to the legislative development of the state, Mbah however added that more would have been achieved if they were given a free hand to operate.
The highpoint of the valedictory session was the issuance of a certificate to the outgoing members and clerk of the House for their meritorious services.
