Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has monitored general cleanup exercises in the state’s two major cities, Umuahia, the state capital and Aba, the commercial city of the state.

Otti had earlier declared an emergency on the cleanup of the two major cities in the state during his inaugural speech where he directed Abians to participate in the cleanup of the state.

Recall that the governor defied the heavy downpour to monitor that exercise, he however, took to his Twitter handle to appreciate those who participated in the cleanup exercise.

“Today, I supervised the cleanup exercise for Aba and Umuahia, which commenced yesterday.

“I wish to thank all those working pro-bono to ensure that our towns are clean, and all who braved the rain to give effect to the directive we passed two days ago,” Otti tweeted.

Reacting to the governor’s post, many people expressed happiness over the cleanup exercise and asked the governor not to stop there but to ensure that the state remains clean.

Recall that Abia State has been facing waste management problems, making the state one of the dirtiest states in Nigeria.

According to reports, “Solid waste disposal and management is a critical problem in Nigeria. Annually, a huge quantity of municipal solid waste is generated in Aba. Municipal solid waste disposal in Aba poses a severe challenge to environmental safety, public health, and the welfare of citizens.

“The indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roadsides, streets, waterways, and empty lands makes the situation worse.

“The impact of this waste management practice in Aba is environmental deterioration. Efforts to improve waste management in Aba have not recorded significant success,” according to reports.
