The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Justice who is also the Solicitor-General of the Federation, Beatrice Jeddy-Agba has charged, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), and other security agencies to avoid all forms of torture, cruelty, degrading and inhuman treatment.

Mrs Jeddy-Agba, who gave the charge in Abuja to commemorate the international day for Victims of Torture noted that to eradicate torture in Nigeria, heads of law-enforcement agencies and other relevant bodies to speak out against the practice.

The Permanent Secretary who is also, the chairman of, the National Committee Against Torture, was represented by the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Babadoko, who said steps had been taken by the federal government towards eradicating torture through the creation of the National Committee Against Torture as well as assent to many international instruments against the practice.

In a remark, Aliyu Abubakar the Director-General of, the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, explained that perpetrators had to be punished to pave the way for the eradication of torture.

While assuring people of the Council’s commitment to providing free legal services to victims of torture nationwide said “Until those involved in acts of torture are brought to book, serving as a deterrent to others, the practice will persist”.

Also speaking, the Executive Director and founder of Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action, Dr Uju Agomoh called for adequate funding of the National Preventive Mechanism as designated by the National Human Rights Commission and the National Committee against Torture.
