Assembly Considers First Bill, Confirms New Clerk

The Anambra State 8th House of Assembly plenary on Tuesday was an interesting session as many, especially the new members of the House, have now become more acquainted with modus operandi of the House. During the plenary on Tuesday, Hon. Onyekachukwu Ike, member representing Nnewi North constituency in the Assembly called on the governor to direct the Commissioner for Health, to commence the construction of General Hospital in Nnewi. The motion which received an overwhelming support from members was seconded by Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi, Minority Leader of the House and member representing Nnewi South constituency II.

This motion for construction of General Hospital in Nnewi is the second motion so far moved by Hon. Ike, since the resumption of the current Assembly in June. In his argument, Hon. Onyekachukwu Augustine Ike said that “the need for a General Hospital in Nnewi cannot be overemphasized.” According to Hon. Ike, “Nnewi is one of the most densely populated towns” a situation he argued, has over stretched the limits of the existing Teaching Hospital in Nnewi. Interestingly, not only that Hon. Ike informed that a parcel of land has already been donated for the purpose of constructing a General Hospital; he also noted that, “the people of Nnewi are ready to work with the governor, even in providing the infrastructure.” The motion was supported by Hon. Golden Ilo representing Ihiala II constituency, Hon. Noble Igwe, representing Ogbaru I, who argued that Nnewi Teaching Hospital is serving the entire Anambra State and thereby increasing pressure on the lean facility. Hon. Henry Mbachu, member representing Awka South I, also made similar submission in his contribution. The motion was also supported by Hon. Chidi Ibemeka of Njikoka I, Hon. Kingsley Udemezue of Idemili North, Hon. Jude Akpua of Njikoka II, Hon. Jude Umennajiego of Onitsha South II, Hon. Tony Muobike of Aguata II, Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi of Anaocha I who expressed shocked that Nnewi doesn’t have a General Hospital. Others are, Hon. Pat Okafor of Onitsha North II, and Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme of Ekwusigo, and the Majority Leader of the Assembly. The motion was then passed.

Earlier, Hon. Jude Umennajiego, representing Onitsha South II had called the attention of the governor in a motion, to direct Commissioner for Work, to construct the failed portion of Ochanja market road intersection in Onitsha. This motion was also supported and passed.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State 8th House of Assembly considered its first bill, and read same for the first time. A bill for a law to establish ‘The Anambra State Market Safety Bill 2023’, was presented by Hon. Kingsley Udemezue, the member representing Idemili North constituency in the Assembly.

Also, a motion for urgent attention to two erosion sites in Nnewi South constituency II was moved by Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi. The motion which called for urgent government intervention by Commissioner for Environment and the Managing Director of Anambra Newmap, in the erosion sites in Osigbu and Ihuebe received massive support from House members, at the end of which the House resolved that the governor is urged to direct the Commissioner for Environment and the MD of Newmap, to urgently mobilize to the two erosion sites in Osigbu and Ihuebe, which has already washed off many homes in the two communities.

Just before the motion for adjournment was moved, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somto Udeze called on the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, who moved a motion for the appointment of Mr. Okey Nwobi as the Acting Clerk of the House and it was passed. Thus, Okey Nwaobi is now the new Acting Clerk of the House of Assembly with effect from Tuesday
