The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois will on Tuesday (tomorrow) hear a fresh suit filed by Nigeria’s 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar on the release of President Bola Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University (CSU).

The one-time vice-president of Nigeria reportedly filed the suit after he lost his case challenging President Tinubu’s election at the presidential election petition court, PEPC, last Wednesday.

Atiku seeks to compel the university to present documents or information relating to President Tinubu as proof that he (Tinubu) attended the university or to permit inspection of the school premises in a civil action.

According to sources who spoke to The West African Pilot News, Atiku believes that the information he seeks from the American university will boost his chances of overturning the September 6 judgment of the presidential election tribunal at the Supreme Court.

Atiku had told the PEPC that President Tinubu “demonstrated inconsistency as to his…certificates evidencing universities attended (Chicago State University).” He hopes to prove this at the apex court for Tinubu’s election to be annulled.

Atiku is requesting that CSU provides the following: A true and correct copy of any diploma for a Bachelor of Science degree issued by CSU in 1979; a true and correct copy of any diploma issued by CSU in 1979 to Mr. Tinubu; true and correct copies of any diplomas issued by CSU (other than to Mr. Tinubu) that contain the same font, seal, signatures, and wording (other than the name of the recipient and the specific degree awarded) as contained in Exhibit C which purports to be a CSU diploma issued to Mr. Tinubu on or about June 22, 1979.

Others include true and correct copies of any CSU documents relating to Mr. Tinubu that were certified by Jamar C. Orr, Esq; and a declaration, and all communications to or from CSU concerning the certification of such documents by Jamar C. Orr, Esq., during the period August 1, 2022, to August 1, 2023.

At the court hearing on Tuesday, the counsel for CSU or the school’s representative is expected to appear in person or opt for a phone-in if out of town.

Atiku has only 14 days to file his appeal at the Supreme Court.
