BusinessNewsNigeriaTinubu tops N25,000 to the salary of junior civil servants

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a short-term pay raise of N25,000 for junior government workers, a move, he said, was to relieve the stress his “bold reforms” have had on families and households.

Tinubu made the pledge on Sunday (Oct. 1) in his nationwide broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary, 48 hours before a planned indefinite work strike by Nigerian workers set to begin October 3.

Nigerian workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, are protesting against Tinubu’s decision to halt the payment of petrol subsidy without a back-up plan. The decision has caused severe economic hardship for Nigerians.

The President said the approval of the pay raise followed negotiations with labour unions and other stakeholders in the business community to increase the federal minimum wage without triggering undue inflation.

President Tinubu said the provisional incentive will run from October 2023 to March 2024. “For the next six months, the average low-grade worker shall receive an additional N25,000 per month,” Tinubu said.
