NewsNigeriaPoliticsPresident Tinubu names new EFCC chairman, secretary

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Olanipekun Olukoyede as the executive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, who announced the new appointment on Thursday, also said President Tinubu appointed Muhammad Hammajoda to serve as the secretary of the commission.

Mr Olukayode will take over from Abdulkarim Chukkol, who took charge of the agency in an acting capacity after AbdulRasheed Bawa was suspended.

Bawa was suspended on June 14, two weeks after Bola Tinubu was sworn in as president because of “weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.”

He was subsequently arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS, and tendered his resignation from detention.

Olukoyede, a lawyer, served as secretary of the anti-graft agency between 2018 and 2020. He was suspended from office by immediate past president Muhammadu Buhari.

Olukayode’s and Hammajoda’s appointments are pending confirmation by the Senate.
