Nigerian women in the South East region on Tuesday called on the government to urgently address the worsening deterioration of insecurity in the region.

“What we see on a daily basis in the region are tears, sorrows and blood,” Josephine Anenih, a one-time women affairs minister, said at a conference tagged “Nkata Ndi Iyom Igbo (NNII)” in Enugu State.

Anenih, who is the convener of the conference, expressed worry that the South East has morphed into a “Hobbesian state where life seems to be brutal, short and nasty.”

Women, she said, bear the major brunt arising from the worsening violence and are often the worst-hit set of people.

“We the women are the greatest victims of the insecurity in the land,” Anenih said, adding that “nothing seems normal anymore.”

She advised the government to “address the insecurity that has made the region lose billions if not trillions of naira for a region known for its industry and commerce.”

She also warned, “We must steady the ship of the region before it sinks like the Titanic which even though supposedly built to be strong sank in a very historic manner.”

In her remarks, the chairperson of the NNII board of trustees, Regina Amadi-Njoku, said that the conference was pivotal because of Igboland’s need for speedy healing, adding that no society developed without security, justice and peace.

“Women play undeniable roles in peacekeeping, arbitration, and the institutionalisation of justice in communities in ways that douse tension and promote peace,” added Amadi-Njoku.

Earlier, Governor Peter Mbah, while declaring the meeting open, advocated the inclusion of women in social development, peace and nation-building in the country.
