A midnight attack on two villages in Yobe and Borno States by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists was staved off by the Nigerian Army during the weekend, with casualties on both sides.
In Yobe, the terrorists were blocked from attacking Katarko village by a team of vigilante guards. A fire battle went on for about 15 minutes.
By the time troops of the 27 Task Force Brigade arrived, two citizen guards had been gunned down and the terrorists took to their heels, some sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
“Terrorist fatalities were uncertain,” Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication in Lake Chad, said.
ISWAP fighters who attacked a military base between Jakana and Mainok in Borno State wounded a soldier as the Nigerian Army battled to keep the terrorists off. The terrorists, however, lost two of their men.
A similar attack on troops mounted at Monguno–Maiduguri Road in Borno was also foiled. The troops were attacked by a gang of terrorists riding two gun trucks and 20 motorcycles.
The number of terrorist casualties could not be confirmed.
