Nigerian football team Sunshine Stars FC were the victims of a terrifying attack as they travelled across the country ahead of their Premier League away match this weekend.
The club, which is based in the city of Akure in Ondo State, were en route to Benin City in Edo State on Thursday for a match with Bendel Insurance FC when gunmen attacked them.
Sunshine Stars’ ball boy was hit by a bullet and has since been taken to hospital, while multiple club officials – including players and the team manager, Seun Betiku – were ‘seriously injured.’
Photos shared by the team on their various social media pages show the coach’s windows and door shattered by gunshots.
‘It took the intervention of officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, that helped rescue the injured officials and the shot individual to a nearby hospital,’ a statement by Michael Akintunde, the club’s media officer, added.
