The Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the year 2024 budget estimate with a total size of five hundred and twenty-one billion, five hundred and sixty-one million, three hundred and eighty-six thousand naira only (₦ 521,561,386,000.00).

The Bill for a law to make provision for the sum of ₦ 521,561,386,000.00 to the services of the government of Enugu state of Nigeria for the year ending 31st day of December 2024 and for other related purposes HB 5, 2023 having scaled through first and second reading in the House was referred to the Committee on Finance and appropriation to consider and report findings and recommendations to the House.

Presenting the report on Thursday, the Chairman, of the House Committee on Appropriation, Anthony Nwankwo, urged lawmakers to accept and pass the bill into law as the committee found no flaw in it.

He commended the Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah for the paradigm shift in the ratio of recurrent and capital expenditures in the budget; 79% of the entire budget was marked for capital expenditures.

Nwankwo said with such funding, Enugu state will enjoy the much-yearned infrastructural development.

Speaking after passing the bill into law, the Speaker of the 8th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, commending lawmakers for the job well done also urge them not to rest their oars as they are expected to oversee implementation of the law in the interest of the masses.

“Today, Members of the State House of Assembly performed their constitutional duty and have just passed this ‘Budget of Disruptive Economic Growth’ into law. It is now a working document for the executive arm of this government,” Ugwu said.

He further expounds, “The budget that has about 79 percent capital expenditure and 21 percent recurrent expenditure, with each sector of the economy like agriculture, education, and the health sectors taking large portions of the funds, is capable of delivering prosperity to the people of Enugu State.”

“I, therefore, enjoin the executive to try very hard to implement the content of this document. And I want to assure the people of this state that this House of Assembly is going to take our oversight functions very seriously.

“It is not going to be business as usual. We are going to ensure that every fund we have appropriated is put to judicious use,” the Speaker promised.

“Let me also take this opportunity to thank our dear Governor, Peter Mbah, for giving a lifeline to the economy of this state.”

Recall that the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah on Tuesday 5th of December 2023 presented a budget estimate of ₦521,561,386,000.00 to the Enugu State House of Assembly.

While the recurrent expenditure for the 2024 budget is one hundred and seven billion, two hundred and twenty-seven million, two hundred and sixty-six thousand naira only (₦107,227,266,000.00), the amount allocated to the capital expenditure is four hundred and fourteen billion, three hundred and thirty-four million, one hundred and twenty thousand naira only (₦414,334,120,000.00).

The 2024 budget represents a 132% increase from the year 2023 revised budget provision of two hundred and twenty-four billion, six hundred and ninety-seven million, eight hundred and ninety-nine thousand, sixty-three naira (₦ 224,697,899,063.00).
