Hundreds of villagers in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau State are dressed in sorrow after a bloody attack by bandits.
Christian families across Nigeria were preparing to celebrate this year’s Christmas Day. So too, the agrarian communities of Bokkos and Barkin Ladi until bandits struck late Saturday, butchering villagers till midnight on Christmas Eve.
No fewer than 12 villages in the towns were attacked. The armed killers burnt houses, displacing several residents; damaged properties and plundered farmlands.
As of Tuesday morning (today), 140 corpses have been found while search teams are still combing the areas in search of injured and killed villagers, Amnesty International Nigeria said in a social media post.
“The brazen failure of the authorities to protect the people of Nigeria is gradually becoming the ‘norm’, President Bola Tinubu said he will enact security measures in response to these attacks, but these promises have — so far — proven to be empty,” the human rights group added.
The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang on Monday night condemned the attacks, saying it was “stupid, senseless and unprovoked.”
“This is unacceptable. Enough is enough,” Governor Mutfwang added.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has hailed troops of ‘Operation Safe Haven’ for recording massive gains in the war against terrorists in Plateau State despite the destructive attacks.
