As part of preparations against any possible outbreak of coronavirus in the state, the Enugu State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved an immediate upgrade and relocation of the State’s Isolation Centre from ESUT isolation ward Colliery to ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane Enugu.
Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, Permanent Secretary Ministry of health disclosed this decision to the newsmen after the medical team’s briefing with the EXCO members on Wednesday. He stated that the council’s decision to move the isolation centre from Colliery Hospital to ESUT was based on the medical team’s recommendation which is in line with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) advice that states locate their Isolation Centres within the Specialist Hospitals for prompt and effective emergency response.
Agujiobi further explained that the relocation is expedient and the present location not only conducive but convenient as well; the location will be easier for patients who may have Coronavirus or suspected to have Coronavirus to be attended to by medical specialists promptly. He added that patients will have access to X-Ray machines, the dialysis machine and other high-tech machines domiciled in the Teaching hospital.

Apart from relocation of the isolation centre, Agujiobi further disclosed that the Council considered and approved the procurement of more personal protective gears; sanitizers, masks, respirators and other items needed by the physicians to manage their patients.
The Council equally approved funds for training and re-training of health workers and skillful contact tracing of persons who may have been in contact with any reported coronavirus case. “With part of the released funds, the media will be agog with mass advocacy and enlightenment messages on coronavirus”, he stated.
Much would not have been achieved if not for the magnanimity of the state government and the EXCO who has approved the sum of one hundred and fifty million naira (N150, 000,000=00) for preparing against outbreak of Coronavirus in the state and the sum of eighty million naira (N80, 000,000=00) for procurement of important and essential drugs that may be needed to treat and manage Coronavirus, Lassa fever and other communicable diseases.
Also, a sum of one hundred million naira (N100, 000,000=00) was similarly approved as an emergency fund to be kept in the Emergency Operation Centre account.
Altogether, a total of three hundred and thirty million naira was approved by the EXCO in preparation against fighting all communicable disease in the state.
While expressing his gratitude to the state government for her great assistance towards combatting any coronavirus case, the Permanent Secretary also requested that full-fitted ambulances and incident vehicles be procured for the hospital to aid prompt response in emergency cases.
Citizens are instructed to use the state’s dedicated toll free lines 117 and 112 while for emergency response, 08182555550.
