NewsNigeriaFive most common New Year resolutions

The year 2024 is here and whether you are trying to get healthy, spend more time with family and friends, or learn a new skill, chances are the new year is motivating you to make a change.

While it is not unusual to make New Year resolutions – hoping to spark positive change – some resolutions are more common than others.

We are sharing the top five most common resolutions people make in the new year. Check if any of these make your resolution list for 2024.

Quit smoking:

Everyone has that one bad habit they want to ditch. It could be nail-biting, lying, gossiping, or even smoking.

Because smoking is unhealthy, most people addicted to it would love to quit the habit and stay smoke-free.

If this is on your list, I congratulate you and I’m rooting for you because the decision to quit smoking is the most important step you can take to improve your overall health.

Save money:

Saving money is one of the essential aspects of building wealth and having a secure financial future.

Given the importance of money, many people would not only love to earn more money but also get out of debt and save more to gain financial freedom and enjoy a quality life.

However, saving money takes commitment and making some sacrifices; and I do hope you can make them.

Pursue a career goal:

Whether you’re in an entry-level position or an executive role, chances are that you would love to advance in your chosen career. Most people aspire to grow professionally because they see it as the best way to become better at their current position, become more valuable and fulfilled, and improve their living standards.

Career goals can range from getting a promotion to earning a professional certificate to improving your networking skills, among others. While setting career goals in 2024, remember to set the ones that reflect your professional vision.

To do this, you might want to ask yourself the following questions: Where do I see myself in the next two years? In five years? Which steps should I take? Which skills do I need?

Exercise/lose weight:

It is everyone’s dream to have a sexy body but while most people make it part of their New Year resolutions, only a few commit to making it a reality.

From improving your mental health and mood to helping your body manage blood sugar and insulin levels to weight control, the benefits of exercise cannot be overemphasised. So, take this goal seriously in 2024.

Get a gym subscription or do home exercises if you are considering the cost of a gym subscription.

Learn a new skill:

With the advancement of technology, traditional jobs are becoming obsolete. The days when you would graduate from a tertiary institution, land a secure job, work with the same company at the same job for 40 years, and then retire at 65 are fast disappearing.

A new economy – the skill economy – has emerged, where people are being paid based on their skills, not their credentials, experience, or job position. Given this, learning a high-income skill would be on the list of most people’s New Year resolutions.

If you are interested in learning a new skill in the new year, consider copywriting, digital marketing or computer programming. They are recession-proof and have the highest earning potential.
