Angered by an over 100 percent increase of tuition fees by the management of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State, students of the institution have shut down the school to protest the increase.
The undergraduate students were seen chanting solidarity songs and waving their placards bearing different inscriptions at the university’s main gate in the early hours of Monday.
Meanwhile, heavily armed security personnel, including men of the Nigeria Police Force, State Security Service (SSS), and Federal Road Safety Corps are currently manning strategic locations of the school campus to avoid a breakdown of law and order.
Recall that Management of the institution had earlier in a circular shown that the tuition was raised from N29,000 to N131,000 for the old students while the fee was raised from N108,000 to N240,000 for fresh students.
