Denmark’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Sune Krogstrup, has met with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Adamawa State, Northeast Nigeria to know their challenges.

Ambassador Krogstrup disclosed this when he paid a courtesy call to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in his office at the Government House Yola.

He explained that the interface with the IDPs had allowed him to hear their concerns in the area of access to education and healthcare among others.

He revealed that one of the most fundamental observations from the engagement was on climate change which is worsening the chances of the people to access water.

Ambassador Krogstrup said the IOM team has taken them to various sites within Yola where he had discussions with the IDPs located in the areas visited.

He revealed that Denmark is among the few countries in the world that provide 0.7 percent of its GNP in development, saying that the United Nations is a key development partner of Denmark.

According to Ambassador Krogstrup, Denmark is one of the biggest contributors to IOM and noted with gladness how IOM was able to make good results in partnership with the Government and local communities.

He noted with satisfaction efforts of the Government, donor partners, and the local communities in providing durable solutions to the IDPs located in the state despite the current economic situation.

He said that Denmark was a candidate for the UN Security Council, and its government would use the opportunity to make sure the concerns, needs, and priorities of the people and African governments are not forgotten.

Responding, Governor Fintiri, solicited for the support of the Government of Denmark to dredge River Benue to address the perennial flooding of communities, farmlands, and other livelihoods of innocent citizens of the state.

“Beyond climate change was hunger and silting of the River Benue which is assuming a dangerous dimension and solicited the support of Denmark to address the situation.

“Flooding in the state has been a tragedy which occurs yearly and resulted in the destruction of houses, farmlands, and other valuables and even lives of innocent citizens,” Governor Fintiri said.

Fintiri appreciated Denmark for investing in the state through the IOM and other donor partners, which will go a long way in addressing the state’s humanitarian crisis.

He said that despite the current economic hardship, the state judiciously utilizes the resources at its disposal to provide durable solutions to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from neighboring states and countries.

“Government has adopted both kinetic and non-kinetic approach in dealing with its internal challenges, and so far today security wise, Adamawa is stable and one of the most peaceful states in the north,” he said.

Governor Fintiri, while soliciting for support of the government of Denmark to overcome the challenges, pledged the State Government’s willingness to continue providing durable solutions to the IDPs.
