President Bola Tinubu has called on state governors to provide land for grazing reserves for nomadic Fulani pastoralists to end the years-long violent herders–farmers clashes in the country.
Rising conflict between herders and farmers in Nigeria is already six times deadlier than Boko Haram’s insurgency in the North East and banditry in the North West.
The violence has claimed over 60,000 lives even as farmers have abandoned their farms because of the daily kidnappings and unprovoked killings by AK-47-wielding herders.
The Middle Belt or the North Central region, especially Benue and Plateau states are the major theatres of these terror attacks.

President Bola Tinubu said the solution to the violent attacks on mostly Christian farmers by mostly Muslim pastoralists is for the latter to have a land of their own where they can freely graze.
“I know what it means as economic sabotage for roaming cows to eat up the crops and vegetation of our farmers. I know what it means; I know it could be painful,” he said.
“When we reorient the herders and make provision for cattle rearing, the problem will be solved. You are the governor who must provide us with the land, I, as the president, am committed to giving you in two to three weeks a comprehensive programme that will solve this problem.”

Tinubu made the call on Monday in Minna during the commissioning of the remodelled Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport and the launching of the agro-processing zone and agricultural mechanisation equipment by the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago.
A similar move by Tinubu’s predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari to provide legal grazing rights and land titles to herders across Nigeria was rejected by most governors, who saw herders as security threats.
The governors passed anti-grazing laws prohibiting herdsmen from openly grazing in their states.
