Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has taken a hardline approach towards those who collaborate with bandits terrorising the region.
During a visit to Tudun Bichi village, a community heavily impacted by bandit attacks, Governor Idris declared his intention to swiftly sign the death warrant of anyone convicted of providing information to bandits.
“The activities of informants defy all norms and religious doctrines. Just for a pittance, some miscreants will provide valuable information to bandits to perpetrate mayhem against their own people,” said Idris on Saturday.
“I will never condone or be lenient with such unscrupulous persons. Let it be known to the informants that whoever is convicted for volunteering information to bandits leading to the killing of innocent souls, I will sign his death warrant instantaneously.”
Kebbi State, like many regions in Nigeria, has been grappling with banditry for years. These criminal groups carry out kidnappings, killings, and cattle rustling in remote communities often taking advantage of the inadequate security presence in those areas.
These unprovoked violent attacks leave Nigerians terrified of carrying out everyday activities. The situation in Kebbi remains tense. The Governor’s stance reflects the frustration felt by many residents who have borne the brunt of bandit violence.
Governor Idris, in addition to his focus on informants, has pledged continued support to security agencies. This includes providing logistical assistance and ensuring the well-being of troops deployed to fight the bandits.
