Anambra State High Court sitting at Otuocha has sentenced Obinna Oraezue, a ‘fake lawyer,’ to three months imprisonment with hard labour at Onitsha Correctional Centre for contempt of court.
The court also referred M.T Olisaeke Law firm, which hired Oraezue as a “junior lawyer” without proper checks, to the Onitsha branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) for investigation and disciplinary actions.
Oraezue, dressed in full regalia of a legal practitioner, appeared in court on June 13, 2024, for a litigant in a land matter but failed to refer to the basic tenets of the profession.
This raised suspicions among the attending lawyers and the judge, leading to his interrogation and subsequent arrest.
During his arraignment, Oraezue confessed to Justice Okechukwu Onunkwo that he studied Political Science, not Law, but had a passion for legal practice.
 He explained that he had spent about a month at the law firm and had never represented anyone in Nigerian courts before.
Oraezue pleaded for forgiveness, citing economic hardship and the responsibility of caring for his five children and unemployed wife as motivations for his actions.
