In a dramatic and desperate cry for help, Shuaibu Yusuf, a young man from Borno State, climbed a telecommunications mast in Abuja to protest the prevailing economic hardship in the country.

The incident took place on Wednesday, 8 July 2024, in the Katampe area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

According to eyewitnesses, Yusuf, who appeared to be in his mid-30s, was seen climbing the mast at around 11:45 a.m., leaving onlookers in shock and disbelief. He reportedly wore a worn-out shirt and trousers and had a worn-out backpack strapped to his back.

As he ascended the mast, Yusuf held a handwritten note that mentioned his frustration with the recent removal of fuel subsidy and the persistent kidnapping and insecurity in the country (see photo).

Security operatives and emergency services were quickly alerted, and a team of police officers and firefighters were dispatched to the scene. After tense and delicate pleas, Yusuf finally came down from the mast at around 2:45 p.m., ending the over three-hour standoff. He was taken into custody afterwards by the police.

The incident has sparked widespread concern, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their frustration with the country’s economic and security challenges.

The government has yet to comment on the incident, but the protest has highlighted the growing discontent among Nigerians over the economic situation.
