Anambra State Police Command has rescued a kidnap victim during an operation in Ihiala local government area of the State. Since the rising insecurity in the Southeast geopolitical zone, Ihiala has been one of the worst hit. However, during an ongoing operation across Ihiala by a joint security team, the kidnapers’ den was busted and the kidnapped victim was rescued unscathed. A statement by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer –PPRO, CSP Tochi Ikenga reads; “In an ongoing operation in Ihiala, a combined team of Police, Military, and AVG operatives busted a criminal den at Umuduru, Ihiala, and rescued a kidnap victim unhurt.”
This breakthrough was achieved with the help of information provided by an arrested member of the gang whom the police preferred not to mention. However, the arrest has been useful in providing the police and other security operatives with relevant information regarding the activities of the criminal gang. According to CSP Ikenga, “The feat is following an arrest of a suspect (name withheld) a few weeks ago and his confession of being a member of a criminal/notorious kidnap gang terrorizing the state, especially in Ihiala.” The Anambra PPRO also noted that the “rescued victim has been debriefed and released to his family, while operations are still ongoing.”
Also, Anambra State Police Command has responded to a recent report that “gunmen” stormed the venue of Ozo title conferment in Nanka, a community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, and “abducted” some people. The Police Command has dismissed the report, describing it as “a ploy to cause tension.” A press brief signed by the PPRO, CSP Ikenga, described the report as “misleading” as well as “a way to discredit professional police action, cause tension in the state, seek public sympathy and distract ongoing police investigation”
According to the police, the suspects were arrested after they failed to appear during an ongoing investigation in which they were required to appear, although they have now been released to their sureties. “To set the record straight, the suspects were arrested in the venue of the proposed ceremony after attempts by the Police to get them to answer for a petition against them, failed. However, they have been debriefed and released to a reliable surety for other necessary police action,” CSP Tochi Ikenga said.
The Police also urged members of the public to be wary of mischievous and false information.
