NewsNigeriaPoliticsAhmed Abubakar Steps Down As NIA Director-General

The Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, has resigned from his appointment.

Abubakar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu on Saturday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Abubakar confirmed his resignation to State House correspondents after meeting with President Tinubu.

He said, “It’s a routine thing, from time to time, to brief Mr President on situations, and today is no exception. After the briefing today, I tendered my resignation, and Mr President graciously approved and accepted the resignation.”

After serving as the NIA chief for seven years, Abubakar expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for allowing him to work under his “transformational leadership” for the past 15 months.

“It is very rare, by the way, to have the opportunity to serve two presidents,” he added.

Abubakar cited “personal family issues” as the reason for his resignation, but noted that it was “nothing very serious.”

He said that though he is out of his office, his friendship with President Tinubu will continue.

“I discussed this with Mr. President, and he understood very well,” Abubakar noted.
